'Verily in their stories are lessons for men of understanding'

Hadhrat
Muhammad Masoom

rahmatullah alayhi

The Shaykh was the khaleefah and third son of Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf Thani rahmatullah alayhi. He was born on the 10th of Shawwaal 1002 Hijri. The Shaykh's father states "The birth of this son was very blessed for us, since it was soon afterwards that I had the honour of meeting Hadhrat Khwajah Baqi Billah rahmatullah alayhi for the first time.

The Shaykh was admitted to a School. After proceeding to memorising the Qur'an he set about acquiring the knowledge of other Islamic Sciences.

The tawajjuh (attention) of Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf Thani rahmatullah alayhi was upon the Shaykh from his childhood. Once he travelled with his father to Delhi. At a time close to midday he fell asleep on his father's bed. Shortly afterwards Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf Thani rahmatullah alayhi arrived. A servant of the Khanqah wished to wake him, but Hadhrat told him not to and himself came back outside and sat down (until the Shaykh woke up by himself) saying, "A friend of Allah is resting, I fear that he should be disturbed."

At the age of eleven the Shaykh acquired the Tareeqah from his father. When the Shaykh was fourteen he related "I have seen in my dream a light shining forth from my body, from which the whole world is illuminated." Upon hearing this dream, Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf Thani rahmatullah alayhi said to him "You are the Qutub of this time."

In terms of strict adherence to the Sunnah and having a high status of Taqwah the Shaykh was just like his father. He had acquired the spiritual status called Wilayat-e-Muhammadi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The emperor Aurangzeb Alamgeer became a mureed and then a khaleefah of the Shaykh. The empire centred at Delhi was run under the instruction of the Shaykh.

Through the Shaykh the Silsilah spread like never before. It is related that he had approximately nine hundred thousand mureeds of whom seven thousand were Khaleefahs. The Shaykh's father gave him the news that he had been given the status of Qayyoomiat.

There are many karamaat affiliated to the Shaykh. The Shaykh states that once I was sitting in the gathering for dhikr after Fajr that I saw Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam come to me and hug me saying 'Allah subhana wa ta'ala has given you the title of Urwat-ul-Wusqa. Be grateful for this great blessing.'

The Shaykh went for Hajj and relates "during the days of Tashreeq, we came to the city from Mina. And upon completing Tawaaf we saw an angel handing me a letter stamped saying that the acts of Hajj had been accepted."

The Shaykh stated, " The main reason in life is to seek the Ma'rifat (knowledge) of Allah and Ma'rifat is of two kinds. Many great scholars have mentioned the first type and the second type is that Ma'rifat which is in the hands of the Soofia Karaam. The first type is within the circle of knowledge whilst the second is within Daa'irah Haal. The first type is not something that is always just 'done' but the second type is always just 'done'. The first type is obtained through completion of Hasooli 'Ilm (outer knowledge) whilst the second type is the completion of 'Ilm-e-Hazoori.

The Shaykh states that the Silsilah Naqshbandiah is the Tareeqah of the Sahabah and it contains Istafaad-ul-Nakaasi (Reflected benefits) meaning that the company of the Shaykh with all Adaab (respect) is essential, after this comes the wazaa'if and adhkaar (lessons and types of dhikr). It is a condition of this Silsilah that the Sunnah be followed in a superlative manner and to be distant from innovations. In this Tareeqah the more a mureed tries to keep a link with his Shaykh the greater is the Fuyooz (blessings) and barakaat. The things that help to create this link are: To have love for the Shaykh in the heart as well as through outwardly actions, to serve the Shaykh and have utmost Adab (respect). The disrespectful person can never reach Allah.

About two to three days before his death the Shaykh wrote to pious men from near and around saying "The time for departure is now here. Pray for me that it passes in a good manner." On the Friday, a day before the Shaykh passed away he came to the Mosque and according to habit he prayed Fajr and sat in Muraaqibah dhikr until Ishraaq.

At the time of his death the Shaykhs tongue was seen to be moving in quick motion. The Shaykh's sons listened closely and heard that he was reciting Surah Yaseen. On the afternoon of the 9th of Rabi-ul-Awwal in the year 1079 Hijri the Shaykh passed away. The tomb of the Shaykh is in Sarhand and a view for the world.
